Colin Manning

Colin is a climate scientist at Newcastle University’s School of Engineering, although based at the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter. As part of the high-resolution climate modeling research group, his work focuses on extreme weather events – examining their causes, impacts, and potential future changes.

Recently, Colin has concentrated on winter storms in Western Europe, investigating the conditions that drive extreme winds, heavy rainfall and their co-occurrence. He has also worked closely with electricity network operators to assess resilience challenges to extreme weather and improve predictions of power outages during severe storms.

In his role at the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water, Colin continues to explore historical variability in extremely wet and windy winters. He is also analysing how the frequency and intensity of these extreme weather events may change over the next decade.
